Apparently enough people are becoming depressed and suicidal after watching Avatar that CNN has an article on it. You know, I can sympathize a little, being a bit of a Star Wars geek, with the desire to live in a fictitious, sci-fi world and all, but I haven't ever had problems with depression or contemplated suicide in hopes of reincarnating in the Star Wars universe when I contemplate real life. Then again, I'm not a hopey-changey idealist who pines for the pristine original world before modern humans ruined it.
Tom Clancy wrote a novel about a group of enviro-nuts who manage to weaponize a strain of the Ebola virus and hope to disperse it through foggers at the Sydney Olympics, thus wiping out mankind. They, of course, also developed a vaccine to which only they are privy. Somehow, a multi-national anti-terrorist unit finds out and flies down to the enviro-nut base camp, aptly enough, in the much ballyhooed Amazon Rainforest. Instead of bringing the enviro-nuts to justice, they simply wipe out their modern technology and leave them in the jungle to fend for themselves.
I think it sounds fair and it's something I'd suggest to all those who apparently think the entire planet is now a parking lot at Wal-Mart outside Topeka, Kansas. If you so glamorize pristine nature untouched by mankind and its wicked civilization, take a trip to Alaska. Just don't bring anything with you except a nice rock for making stone tools. Because either modern technology and civilization is bad and should be totally avoided or, it isn't. Say hi to the bears and Grizzly Man for me. :-)
